Historical Sketch
Old Regular Baptist Churches are a product of central Appalachia. The belief system of the church developed during the nineteenth century, and the first Association, called New Salem, can trace its lineage to 1825 in the Pike, Floyd, Perry, and Harlan counties of Kentucky. The organization of the denomination is constructed by the aforementioned association, which is formed when a group of individual churches unite to form one body. In his 1989 work The Old Regular Baptists of Central Appalachia: Brothers and Sisters of Hope, Howard Dorgan identified 16 separate Old Regular Baptist Church Associations, primarily located in Kentucky and Virginia, but with some churches located as far away as Michigan or Florida. Each association publishes yearly minutes, which contain a record of the association meetings, as well as obituaries of church members who have passed in recent years. Often, a listing of ordained ministers, church addresses, and statistical information on the individual churches are also included.
These minutes were collected through the Pike County Historical Society, and upon their closure, donated to the Pikeville College Archives.
